This multipurpose pattern makes a veritable feast of items. Clouds, carnations, doll skirts, and snowballs are all possible. Change it up to make an original piece.
This pattern is so very multi-purposed. It can make a cloud, a carnation, a doll skirt, snowballs, coasters, a mop, and even play food for kids. Take a look at it and see what it can do.
Any hook and any yarn can be used. Match the hook to the yarn so that it is appropriate, and so that it gives the correct gauge. It will make a variety of sizes all depending on the yarn and the hook. The pattern used in the pictures was done with a K-hook and a chenille size 5 yarn.
Chain (ch) 4 and join with slip stitch in first chain to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch4—this counts as 1 treble crochet (tr). Make 12 treble crochets into ring, and join with sl st in top of beginning chain. This round has made 13tr’s.
Round 2: Working in back loops only (using the loop furthest away from you on each stitch), ch1, 2 single crochets (sc) in each sc around, for a total of 26 sc’s in this round. Join with sl st to first sc.
Round 3: Working in back loops only, ch3, 2 double crochet (dc) in same space, 3dc in each sc around, for a total of 78 dc’s. Join with sl st in top of beginning chain. Turn.
Round 4: **Chain 5, sc in next dc; repeat from ** all the way around. Join with sl st in first ch of beginning ch.
Fasten off.
The photos below show how this pattern can be manipulated into different things using just one piece. Each photo is of the same pattern, but “sewn” or secured in different ways and done in different colors.
Cloud: When the piece is attached to its base, simply stretch it out into an oval shape. It will lay nicely once sculpted into the desired shape.
Snowball: Crochet one up in white, arrange it in a ball, and secure it as such.
Carnation: Try making one in pink, red, or white for a lovely flower.
Plant Coaster: When a plant is placed on this piece, it makes a unique and decorative coaster.
Ruffled Doll “Polka” Skirt: Make the starting hole a bit bigger to fit the waist of a doll. Use variegated yarn, and a colorful polka skirt is born. Use a rubber-band waist if necessary.
This pattern truly is so easy to vary, the possibilities are endless. Just think of all the things that can be made if the yarn and hooks are changed. Try using this pattern to make doll hair, monster buddies, and play food. Use cotton to make a mop – play or real. Have fun, and design an original.
