The chevron stitch has been around for a long, long time in crochet. Update the look with a few tweaks and try it on a new project.
The chevron stitch has always been popular; most of us have a chevron-stitched blanket from Grandma tucked away. Most recently and in particular, it was extremely popular in the 1970s; it’s making a huge comeback right now. New colors, novelty yarns, and “green” choices have all helped to update the chevron stitch for the 2000s and beyond.
There are endless possibilities and permutations. Luckily, most types of chevron motifs are appropriate for beginners.
Simple Chevron Stitch
Multiple of 10 sts + 1 (add 2 for base chain)
- Row1: Skip 2ch (count as 1dc), 1dc into next ch, *1dc into each of next 3ch, over next 3ch work dc3tog, 1dc into each of next 3ch, 3dc into next ch; rep from * ending last rep with 2dc into last ch, turn.
- Row2: 3ch (count as 1dc), 1dc into first st, *1dc into each of next 3dc, over next 3 sts work dc3tog, 1dc into each of next 3dc, 3dc into next dc; rep from * ending last rep with 2dc into top of tch, turn.
- Repeat Row 2.
"Close" Chevron Stitch
Multiple of 11 sts + 1 (add 1 for base chain)
- Work 4 rows each in colors A and B alternately throughout.
- Row1 (right side): 2sc into 2nd ch from hook, *1sc into each of next 4ch, skip 2 ch, 1 sc into each of next 4ch, 3sc into next ch; rep from * ending last rep with 2sc only into last ch, turn.
- Row2: 1ch, 2sc into first st, *1sc into each of next 4 sts, skip 2 sts, 1sc into each of next 4 sts, 3sc into next st; rep from * ending last rep with 2sc only into last st, skip tch, turn.
- Repeat Row 2.
"Sharp" Chevron Stitch
Multiple of 14 sts (add 2 for base chain)
- Row 1: Skip 2ch (count as 1dc), 2dc into next ch, *1dc into each of next 3ch, [over next 3ch work dc3tog] twice, 1dc into each of next 3ch, [3dc into next st] twice; rep from * ending last rep with 3dc once only into last ch, turn.
- Row 2: 3ch (count as 1dc), 2dc into first st, *1dc into each of next 3 sts, [over next 3 sts work dc3tog] twice, 1dc into each of next 3 sts, [3dc into next st] twice; rep from * ending last rep with 3dc once only into top of tch, turn.
- Rep Row 2.
"Lacy" Chevron Stitch
Multiple of 10 sts (add 2 for base chain)
- Row 1: Skip 2ch (count as 1dc), 1dc into each of next 4ch, *skip 2ch, 1dc into each of next 4ch, 2ch, 1dc into each of next 4ch, 2ch, 1dc into each of next 4ch; rep from * to last 6ch, skip 2ch, 1dc into each of next 3ch, 2dc into last ch, turn.
- Row 2: 3ch (count as 1dc), 1dc into first st, 1dc into each of next 3 sts, *skip 2 sts, 1 dc into each of next 3 sts, [1dc, 2ch, 1dc] into 2ch sp, 1dc into each of next 3sts; rep from * to last 6 sts, skip 2 sts, 1 dc into each of next 3 sts, 2dc into top of tch, turn.
