Crocheting a Six-Petal Floral Appliqué with Size 10 Thread

Flower with Six Petals, Bill Thomas and Renee Blixt

Decorate fabric pieces with this lovely flower, stem, and leaf design. It's quick, easy, and adorable.

Add a special touch to any fabric item with this lovely floral appliqué. Use any colors at all of size 10 mercerized crochet cotton and a size 7 steel hook.

Flower

This flower will measure a little less than two inches in diameter.

Round 1: Chain (ch) 4. Join with slip stitch (sl st) in first chain stitch to from a ring.

Round 2: Ch2 (counts as a single crochet.) Work 7 single crochet (sc) into ring. Join with sl st to top of the beginning chain. This round makes 8sc (including the first ch2 as a sc.)

Round 3: Ch2 (counts as a sc.) Sc in same st. Work 2sc in each sc all the way around. Join the round with a sl st. This round makes 16sc.

Round 4: Ch2 (counts as a sc.) Sc in same st, sc in next sc. **Work 2sc in next sc, sc in next sc, and repeat from ** all the way around. Join round with a sl st. Change color if so desired by fastening off the first color. This round makes 24sc.

Round 5: Join second color in join of previous round if a second color is being used. Otherwise, just continue with same color. **Ch4, skip (sk) 3sc, sc in next sc** repeat 5 times. Ch4, sk3 sc sl st in first chain. This round makes six petals for the flower.

Round 6: Sl st into ch4 loop. Ch1. In same loop, work a half-double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), 4 treble crochet (trc), dc, hdc, and sc. In each loop around, work sc, hdc, dc, 4trc, dc, hdc, and sc. Join with sl st to beginning sl st, and fasten off the work.

Leaf

This leaf will measure about one inch by one and a half inches.

Chain 11. Sc in second ch from hook.

**Hdc in the next 2 ch, dc in next 4 ch, hdc in next 2ch, sc in last ch, ch3.**

Continue without turning. Work along the opposite side of chain—sc in first dh, rep from ** to **.

***Begin picot: Sc in first sc, sc in next hdc, ch 3, sl st into the third ch from hook (picot made.)***

****Sc in next 2 sts and work picot (*** to ***)****

Repeat from **** to **** (*** to *** is within that sequence, so watch the repeat carefully) 4 times.

In the nearest ch-3 loop, work sc, ch 4, sl st into third ch from hook, ch1 1 and sc.

*Work picot and sc in next 2 sts.* Repeat * to * 5 times. Sl st in ch-3 loop and fasten off.

Stem

Make a chain about 6 inches long. Sl st in second ch from hook and in each ch to end. Fasten off.

Arrangement

Arrange the three pieces onto whatever fabric is preferred. Sew them on. Make a few complete flowers out of complimentary colors—the finished product will look like a lovely garden picture.
