Crochet Thread Pull-On Hat

Almost everyone can at least occasionally use a hat. Use this pattern to create light-weight hats for everyone and anyone.

These lightweight hats are perfect for any climate. Pick up two balls of bedspread-weight mercerized cotton crochet thread (size 10) in any two colors (or the same color for a monochromatic look) and a size B crochet hook, and get ready to crochet.

The example pictured here was made out of one ball of hot pink thread and one ball of variegated hot pink-to-white-to-light pink thread. This pattern will fit an average-sized adult’s head.

Gauge

6 rows of 12 double crochets should measure 2 inches.

Pattern

Work with two balls together at all times. The work is turned on each round.

Chain 3 (counts as 1st dc in round one. Make sure the slip knot (from the tail end) slides closed.

Round 1: Into the top loop of the slip knot, make 11dc. Tighten the slip knot (secure it) as the first couple of rounds are being made. Slip stitch into 3rd chain to join. Ch3, turn. 12 stitches in round 1.

Round 2: 1dc in same place as turning ch. **2dc in next stitch (st), rep from** to end of round. Sl st to top of turning ch, ch3, turn. 24 stitches in round 2.

Round 3: **2dc in next st, 1 dc, rep from ** to last st. 2dc in last st, join with sl st to top of turning ch, ch3, turn. 36 stitches.

Round 4: 1dc in same place as turning ch, 2dc, **2dc in next st, 2 dc, rep from ** to end. Join with sl st to top of turning ch, ch 5, turn. 48sts.

Round 5: **2dtr in next st, 1 dtr, rep from** to end. Join with sl st to top of turning ch. Ch3, and turn. 96sts.

Round 6: 3dc, **2dc in next st, 6dc, rep from** to last 2sts, 2 dc. Join with sl st to top of turning ch, ch3, turn. 108sts.

Rounds 7 through 10: Increase 12sts evenly in each of these rounds. 156sts made in each round.

Round 11: Ch2 to make a chain of 5 (counts as 1st dtr in round 11,) 1 dtr in each st to end. Ch3 and turn. 156sts.

Round 12: 1dc in same place as turning ch, **35dc, 2dc in next st, rep from** twice. 35 dc, and join with sl st to top of turning ch. Ch3 and turn. 160sts.

Round 13, 14, and 15: Work rounds in dc. Ch3 and turn. 160sts.

Round 16: Ch 1 more, and work round in dtr. Ch3 and turn. 160sts.

Round 17: Work round in dc. Ch3 and turn. 160sts.

Round 18: Work round in dc. Ch3 and turn. 160sts.

Round 19: 1dc in same place as turning ch. **36dc, 2dc in next st, rep from ** twice. 36dc. Join with sl st to top of turning ch. Ch3 and turn. 164sts.

Round 20: 1dc in same place as turning ch, **37 dc, 2dc in next st, rep from** twice, 37 dc. Join with sl st to top of turning ch. Ch3 and turn. 168sts.

Round 21: 1dc in same place as turning ch, **38dc, 2dc in next st, rep from** twice, 38dc. Join with sl st to top of turning ch. Ch3 and turn. 172sts.

Round 22: 1dc in same place as turning ch, **39dc, 2dc in next st, rep from** twice, 39dc. Join with sl st to top of turning ch. Ch3 and turn. 176sts.

Rounds 23-27: Work another 5 rounds in dc without shaping. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
