Crocheted & Felted Calla Lily Flower

Easy & Free Crochet Pattern—Felt it or Not

Aug 21, 2008 Renee Blixt

Crochet a pretty lily and felt it to make it sturdy and textural. Attach it as a decoration, or add wire to it for a stand-alone lily. Make a few into a lovely bouquet.

Skill level: Easy

Materials

  • Size J / 10 / 6mm crochet hook
  • Worsted Weight Wool Yarn Scraps in Yellow, Ivory, and Green
  • Washing Machine and Dryer
  • Clean terry-cloth towel

Gauge

16sc and 16 rows = 4 inches, however gauge is not crucial because of shrinking during felting.

Special Note

To change color, work until 2 loops remain on hook, drop old color, yo (yarnover) with new color and draw through both loops on hook.

Special Abbreviation

Sc2tog: [Insert hook in next stitch, yarnover and draw up a loop] twice, yarnover and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Stem

Starting at bottom of stem with green, ch (chain) 6, sc in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (right side): Sc (single crochet) in first chain to form a ring, sc in each remaining chain around—6 sc.

Round 2: Sc in each sc around.

Repeat round 2 until tube measures about 10 inches / 25.5 cm, ending last round with 2 sc in next sc—7 sc.

Stem Top

Round 1: Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc—8 sc.

Round 2: Sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc—9 sc.

Round 3: Sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc—10 sc.

Round 4: Sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc—11 sc.

Round 5: Sc in nest 10 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Change to ivory yarn in the last sc—12sc. Fasten off green. Begin working in rows.

Petal

Row 1: (right side) With ivory, sc in next sc and in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc—13 sc. Chain 1 and turn.

Rows 2-14: Repeat Row 1 thirteen times more—1 more sc in each row than in previous row. At end of row 14, there will be 26 sc.

Rows 15-21: Sc in each sc across—26 sc. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 22: Sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, sc2tog—25 sc. Chain 1 and turn.

Rows 23-28: Repeat Row 22 six more times—1 less sc in each row than in previous row. At end of Row 28, there will be 19 sc.

Row 29: Sc2tog, sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, sc 2tog—17sc. Chain 1 and turn.

Rows 30-36: Repeat Row 29 seven times more—2 less sc in each row than in previous row. At end of Row 36, there will be 3 sc.

Rows 37 and 38: Sc in each sc across. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 39: Sc in next sc, sc2tog—2sc. Chain 1 and turn.

Rows 40 and 41: Sc in each sc across. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 42: Sc2tog—1 sc. Fasten Off

Stamen

With wrong side facing, join yellow yarn with slip stitch in 6th sc on Row 1 of petal, chain 18.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each remaining chain across—17 sc. Join with slip stitch in the joining slip stitch. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends on Calla Lily. With stamen side facing you, fold outside edges of petal inward at stem until they overlap, just as a real Calla Lily does. Using yarn needle and ivory yarn, tack edges in several places between Rows 1 and 12 to hold overlap in place. Weave in ends securely.

Felting and Drying

Set washing machine to hot on a heavy-duty cycle with low water level. Add all pieces to washing machine. Let cycle run through agitation, but stop before the machine hits the spin cycle. Pull pieces out to check if they are done. The pieces should be very stiff with almost no stitch definition visible.

Pieces will likely have to be run through 2 to 3 cycles for best results. The longer pieces felt, the better. Once the flowers are done, pull them out and squeeze out as much water as possible by pressing it in a towel.

Dry pieces in clothes dryer. Remove while slightly damp. Shape the pieces and allow them to finish drying on a flat surface.
