Protect Your Precious Notebook Computer with this straightforward Crocheted Cover. Great project for a budding crochet artist.

Whatever the size of your portable computer, you can easily make this protective “sock” to fit over it. This sturdy case will keep your laptop clean and protect it against accidental bumps and scratches, and it looks really cool too!

This version, with a matching MP3 cover, was made using multicoloured wool called Tapestry for a more eye-catching effect. Choose a good 8 ply wool and your favourite colour. The sock easily slides on and off your laptop.

Materials

  • 3 x balls of 8 ply wool for the 15 inch Power Book
  • Medium size crochet hook
  • Tape Measure

Method

  1. Measure your laptop computer. The case fits over the shortest side, so take that measurement as your starting point.
  2. Crochet a chain of double crochet (also known as single crochet by some people) the same length as the shortest side plus 2 centimetres.
  3. Double Crochet (DC) into the front loop only across one side
  4. Use 3 DC in the last stitch to turn
  5. DC into the back of the original chain to get back to the other side
  6. Use 3 DC in the last stitch to turn
  7. Keep on working in rounds – it is a bit like making a clay pot out of sausages of clay.

Finishing

Use a simple Shell Trim to complete on the last round. This means crocheting multiple double crochets into one loop. Five stitches per loop makes a deep shell while 3 is sufficient using some wools. Experiment to get the right effect for your wool type.

Nadia Priestley, the designer says "Initially it flops around like an overfilled envelope and you'll wonder if you need to tighten up anything but you won't - just keep on working in rounds, let it flop about all over the place... there will come a point where the floppiness naturally decreases and it starts to look more like a nicely fitting Powerbook sock."

To Make the MP 3 Cover

Well it is exactly the same method, starting by measuring the width of the narrowest side. Again, just keep on building up the layers, using double crochet into the front of the loop with 3 stitches in the last loop to turn.

How Long Does it Take to Complete the Note Book Cover?

This one was made with quite a small, tight stitch. As a result it takes longer to make. On the other hand, the resulting textile is very firm and strong and makes a better protective cover for your laptop.

You can make it quicker with a bigger stitch (choose a larger crochet needle) but the result won’t be as firm or satisfying.

Other Ideas

The basic pattern can be used in other ways:

  • Make it into a shoulder bag by adding a long handle from side to side
  • Crochet a re-usable shopping bag by choosing a twine and using a bigger hook. Put on two handles this time.
  • Crochet a cover for your mobile phone – add a wrist loop and a flap with a button hole to fasten it securely.
