This so-easy-to-make heart can be made using any yarn and corresponding hook, and it can be stitched up in almost no time.

These so-easy-to-make hearts make great embellishments on Valentine’s Day cards, or they can be appliquéd on anything. Use any yarn and corresponding hook. They can be stitched up in almost no time.

Supplies

Craft these hearts by using any hook size with any corresponding yarn or yarns. Plain worsted weight yarn works fantastically.

Pattern #1

Chain 2 (just like a very small foundation chain)

Row 1: Make 2 single crochet stitches (sc) in the second chain from the hook. This step has made 2 single crochets.

Row 2: Chain 1, turn, 2 single crochets in each single crochet across. This step makes 4 sc’s.

Row 3: Chain 1, turn, sc in first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in last sc. This has made 5 single crochets.

Row 4: Chain 1, turn, sc in first sc, 4 dc in next sc, sl st in next sc, 4 dc in next sc, sc in next sc. Row 4 should have 11 stitches.

Finishing: Do not turn heart; instead, pivot (work in holes) to work around lower edges of heart. Work sc evenly spaced around lower edges of heart, working 2 sc in lower point. Join with sl st in first sc of row 4.

Pattern #2

Using worsted weight yarn with a J-hook will make this heart about one inch in diameter. It's super easy and super quick.

Chain 3 and slip stitch into first stitch to create a loop. Chain 2. Into loop, work 1sc, 1dc, 1tr, 1dtr, 1tr, 1dc, 2sc, 1dtr, 2sc, 1tr, 1dtr, 1tr, 1dc. Slip stitch into middle loop and pull yarn tight.

Heart-y Ideas

**Make the smaller heart (using a small hook and crochet thread) as an appliqué on a small item, such as an eyeglass case, and MP3 holder, or a cell phone holder. Freeform crochet looks great when hearts are incorporated. Their shape lends well to fronts of slippers and top sides of mittens. It's adorable as a zipper attachment.

**Make a collection of same-yarned, but differently sized hearts (by doubling up the yarn and using a larger hook.) Add these to a dress, a purse, or picture frame.

**Make a large cotton heart as a potholder.

**Make larger hearts as placemats.

**Make a set of medium size hearts to make coasters.

**Attach one to a make a special card for someone.

**Place the hearts (use different sizes) on top of each other and stitch them down the middle to create a layered effect.

**Make a number of them to pass out to co-workers on Valentine’s Day. Add a safety pin, and they are done.

**Stitch some together to make a runner or a wall decoration.

**Do some up in crochet thread and link them together to make a stunning doily runner.

**Red hearts look great, but so do pink, white, silver, and gold. Furry novelty yarn gives an adorable touch.
