Add these crocheted stars to store-bought items, and create one-of-a-kind presents at the last minute.

Take ordinary and turn it into extraordinary. These stars are so versatile. Add these crochet embellishments to a purchased item, and personalize any store-bought gift. It takes so little time, and they are so easy to make.

Why not give gifts that have a special stamp to them instead of the usual mass produced choices that everyone else, has, too?

Star Pattern

Round 1: Chain 4, using a size D hook (3.25mm) and any choice of amenable yarn. Make 14 dc (double crochet stitches) in the 4th ch from hook (beginning ch counts as first dc.) Join with slip stitch in top of beginning chain. This will produce 15 dc’s. Remember that 14 of them will be in one loop that is now somewhat stretched beyond its normal limits.

Round 2: **Chain 5, working in back bars of ch-5 only, slip stitch in 3rd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch; skip next 2 dc of Round 1, slip stitch in next dc; repeat from ** 4 times to get 5 star points.

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Items That Can Be Embellished

Buy items to embellish that are fairly simple and are not too busy, so that the stars do not clash with the background they will be mounted upon.

These stars can be used on: dresses, sweatshirts, sweaters, bags, paperback, purses, hats, aprons, barrettes, hair bands, gloves, muffs, mittens, and towels. They can even be stitched to a ribbon to make a bracelet.

Use the Versatility of the Stars to an Advantage

A little change up leads to limitless amounts of ideas.

Different sized stars of the same thread can be grouped. Imagine how adorable this would look on a little girl’s dress.

Same-thread stars of different colors may be layered. For example, complete one round in a metallic gold thread and the next in silver. This will create a shimmering effect. It is best worked using the same-sized threads within the same star.

An Example of This Appliqué’s Versatility

In the picture, two stars are shown that were made using the exact same pattern given above. The purple one was made using a size E hook and fingering weight yarn. The gold one was made using a size E hook and two strands of size 10 cotton crochet thread. From this one simple change comes two very different stars.

Use the same pattern, but change up hook and yarn for a completely new look. No two will ever be the same.
