Yarn, hook size, and gauge depend on project. Refer to instructions for specific project, or experiment—it’s the perfect motif to use when learning to design.
Each round of a granny square may begin with a new color, although it does not have to. To change color between rounds, fasten off the old color at the end of a round and join the new color in any corner chain-space to begin the next round. When joining a new color, hold the right side of the granny square facing you.
Make Ring: Chain 4. Join with slip stitch (sl st) in first chain to form a ring.
Round 1: On the right side, chain 3. This chain (ch) 3 counts as the first double crochet (dc) on this round, and on every round hereafter. 2dc in ring, [ch2, 3dc in ring] 3 times, ch2. Join with sl st in top of beginning chain. What has just been made is a “12dc, 4ch-2 space (sp)” square. If a color change is to be made, fasten off.
Round 2: If no color change is being made, sl st in each stitch (st) to reach the first ch-2 sp (Note: a “ch-2 sp” is simply where the “holes” are in the previous round. So, what the pattern is stating here is to slip stitch across stitches to reach the first chain-space to begin the next round. That way, the yarn is being moved to the space without being noticeable). If a new color is going to be used, join it with a sl st in any ch-2sp. Ch3, [2dc, ch2, 3dc] in same ch-2 sp (a corner has just been made), **ch1, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in next ch-2sp (another corner has just been made); repeat from ** 2 more times, ch1; join with sl st in top of beginning ch. A “4-corners, 4 ch-1sp” round has been completed. If a color change is to be made, fasten off.
Round 3: Sl st in each st into first ch-2 sp or join new color with sl st in any ch-2sp; ch3, [2dc, ch2, 3dc] in same ch-2 sp, **ch1, 3dc in next ch-1 sp, ch1, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in next ch-2 sp; repeat from ** 2 more times, ch1, 3dc in next ch-1sp, ch1; join with sl st in top of beginning ch. A “4 corners, 8ch-1sp, 3dc along each side” round has just been completed.
Round 4: Sl st in each st into first ch-2sp or join new color with sl st in any ch-2sp; ch3, [2dc, ch2, 3dc] in same ch-2sp; **[ch1, 3dc in next ch-1sp] across to next ch-2sp, ch1,[3dc, ch2, 3 dc] in next ch-2sp; repeat from ** 2 more times, [ch1, 3dc in next ch-1sp] across to next ch-2sp, ch1; join with sl st in top of beginning ch. A “4 corners, 12ch-1sp, 6dc along each side” has been executed.
Keep going if so desired, or make the square smaller by not finishing all the rounds. It’s completely up to the crocheter.
