These mittens are quick to make, are suitable for girls and boys, and are very popular with toddlers. They can be finished in an afternoon.

Materials

• Worsted-Weight Yarn
• Size G Hook

Gauge

• 17 rounds of 16 single crochet equals four inches(10cm).

Special Stitches

Front Post dc (FPdc): Yarn-over (yo), insert hook from front to back to front around the post of the indicated stitch. Yo and draw up a loop. Then, **yo and draw through 2 loops on hook.** Repeat**to**once more.

Back Post dc (BPdc): Yo, insert hook from back to front to back around the post of the indicated stitch. Yo and draw up a loop. Then, **yo and draw through 2 loops on hook.** Repeat**to**once more.

Single Crochet 2 stitches together (sc2tog): **Insert hook in next st, yo and draw up a loop.** Repeat **to** once more. Yo and draw through all three loops that are on the hook.

Pattern

Cuff

The pattern starts at the cuff. Chain 20. If this chain fits the child’s wrist, then the mittens will be the correct size. Join with slip stitch (sl st) in first chain to form a ring. Take care not to twist the stitches.

Round 1: Chain (ch)2, double crochet (dc) in same ch as joining ch, and in each ch all the way around for a total of 20dc. Join with sl st in 2nd ch of beginning ch-2.

Round 2: Chain 2. **FPdc around next stitch. BPdc around next stitch.** Repeat**to**until all the way around. This makes 10FPdc’s and 10BPdc’s. Join.

Repeat Round 2 until the cuff measures about 2 inches(5cm).

From now on, work in continuous rounds. Do not join rounds, or else a seam will be visible.

Lower-\ Mitten

Round 1: Sc in each st all the way around, making 20sc.

Round 2: 2sc in first st, then sc in next 9sts, 2sc in next st, sc the rest of the way around, making 22sc.

Round 3 to 8: Repeat rounds 1 and 2 three more times. Each round will increase by 2sc. Round 8 should have 28 sc. Place a marker. Don’t fasten off.

Body

Rounds 1 & 2: Sc in each st around to 4 sts before marker, skip next 8 sts to make the thumb opening. Sc in each remaining st. This round makes 20sc for the fingers, and leaves 8 sts open for the thumb. Don’t work the thumb until the pattern states to do so.

Round 3: Sc in next st and in each st of the fingers-section around. Again, this round makes 20sc.

Round 4: 2sc in first st, then sc in next 9sts, 2sc in next st, sc the rest of the way around, making 22sc.

Rounds 5 & 6: Repeat rounds 2 and 3. The end of round 6 should have 24sc.

Repeat Round 2 until mitten is approximately 2½ inches (6.5cm) from thumb opening.

Upper Mitten

Round 1: **Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog.** Repeat from**to** 6 times for a total of 18sc.

Round 2: **Sc in next st, sc2tog.** Repeat from **to** 6 times for a total of 12sc.

Round 3: **Sc2tog** 6 times to make 6sc. Join with sl st. Fasten off, leaving a tail. Weave tail through stitches of last round. Gather the top of the mitten securely.

Thumb

Round 1: Join with sc in first skipped stitch of thumb opening, leaving a tail. Sc in each remaining st around thumb opening for a total of 8sc.

Round 2: Sc all the way around.

Repeat Round 2 until thumb measures approximately 1½ inches (4cm).

Last Round: **Sc2tog**4 times. Join with sl st. Fasten off, leaving a tail. Weave tail through stitches of last round. Gather the top of the thumb securely.

Sew in the small space between thumb and body. Weave in tails.
