Add Features to the Body of a Totebag

Everyone is encouraged to be as "green" as possible when shopping. This bag helps with just that, and it's so versatile that it can double as a purse, too.

After completing the body of a tote, continue on to make the handles and a pocket.

Skill Level: Easy

Finished Size: 10 ½ inches tall, (not including handle)

Gauge: 9 sc = 2 inches; 10 sc rows = 2 inches

Materials

  • Large skeins of worsted weight yarn (Green and Ivory)
  • Size F/5/3.75mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle

Pocket

Row 1: With WS facing, join off-white with sc in first rem lp of row 21, sc in eah rem lp across, turn. (27 sc)

Rows 2-46:Ch 1, sc in first rem lp on Bag and first st on Pocket at same time, sc in each of next 25 sts on Pocket only, sc in rem lp on Bag and last st on Pocket at same time, turn. Fasten off at end of last row.

Handles (Make two of Each)

Left Side

Row 1: With RS of bag facing, join green with sc in first rem lp on rnd 21 just below left-side of column of rem lps, sc in each of next 4 rem lps, turn.

Rows 2-46: Ch 1, sc in first rem lp on bag and first st on handle at same time, [sc in next st on handle and rem lp on bag at same time] 4 times, turn.

Row 47: Holding 2 strands of green tog, working in sts on handle only, ch 1, sc in each of first 3 sts, sc dec in last 2 sts, turn. (4 sc)

Rows 48-92: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. At end of last row, fasten off.

Right Side

Row 1: With RS of bag facing, join green with sc in first rem lp on rnd 21 just below right-side of column of rem lps, sc in each of next 4 rem lps, turn.

Rows 2-92: Rep rows 2-92 of Left Side.

Sew last row of Left Side to last row of Right Side.

Edging

Row 1: Beg at right side of outer edge of handle, join green with sl st in first rem lp on row 1 that handle worked in, ch 1, working in ends of rows on handle and in lps on bag that handle was worked in at same time, sc in end of each row across bag, sc in each of each row on handle across to left side of bag, working in ends of rows on handle and in lps on bag that handle was worked in at same time, sc in end of each row across bag. Fasten off.

Row 2: Working on opposite side of handle, rep row 1.
